Black River Falls was truly blessed when Gil Homstad decided to ‘come home’ after living in Madison. Gil is a humble and discreet man who has done more for this area than most of us will ever realize. Over the past thirty-six years, if you looked closely behind the scenes of our community, Gil would be there, quietly providing guidance and assistance.

When Gil’s dream of a foundation was realized, he hoped it would serve as a community tool. This tool could be used by many all working toward the ultimate goal, improving the quality of life in BRF. Under his direction, BRF Area Foundation has achieved tremendous success. Gil’s accomplishments are not limited to the community projects and improvements we can easily see and enjoy each day. His awareness of the needs of those less fortunate led to the establishment of, and funding for, several programs designed to provide help with essential needs to thousands of residents. Everyone living in this area has benefited from several of Gil’s projects, even if they don’t realize it. It is difficult to imagine what our community would look like today were it not for his many years of tireless work on our behalf.

Gil’s vision for a Foundation was well thought out. He built a solid base, and long-range plans to ensure the Foundation’s growth, stability, and future. Over the years, Gil served as a mentor to many in the community but most importantly to past and present Trustees. Have no doubt, BRF Area Foundation will continue successfully moving forward, and the legacy Gil created will live on well beyond our lifetimes because of the groundwork he laid.

Our fervent hope is that Gil’s change from Foundation Chairman to Chairman Emeritus, will allow him to regain use of his dining room table, which is often filled with the tangible evidence of his community work. Gil, may every day be filled with happiness!
